"The parties in this conflict are not merely abolitionists and slaveholders—they are atheists, socialists, communists, red republicans, Jacobins, on one side, and the friends of order and regulated freedom on the other. In one word, the world is the battleground—Christianity and Atheism the combatants; and the progress of humanity is at stake." This is a quote by James Henley Thornwell.

James Henley Thornwell was a 19th-century American Presbyterian pastor, slaveholder, and author from the state of South Carolina. Thornwell supported the Confederacy during the American Civil War and propagated a theory that believed slavery was morally justifiable and supported by Christian principles. However, he preached that African Americans were persons formed in the image of God just like white people and that they should call slaves their brothers, in contrast to many proponents of slavery. Thornwell held to a collectivist theory of society in which everyone was interconnected with both God and one another.
