What was the purpose for the American Colonization Society?
The American Colonization Society set up land on the west coast of Africa, named Liberia, and by 1822 the first black Americans came to the land meaning freedom. some abolitionists and blacks opposed it because they wanted freedom in the U.S. and the full rights of citizenship. By 1860 11,000 freed blacks from America were settled there (there were over 4 million slaves in the U.S.).
